Prof Bill Clegg

Bill graduated in Chemistry from Cambridge, where he also obtained his PhD in 1973 and was made ScD in 1989. He has spent most of his career at Newcastle University except for 6 years in Göttingen (Germany). His area of research is X-ray crystallography including the development of international facilities using synchrotron radiation. Formally retired in 2009, he continues with part-time research and also served for several years until the end of 2023 as a University Chaplain.

For leisure he’s a keen touring cyclist, choral tenor, and involved in amateur dramatics. He’s married with 4 children and 3 grandchildren, and currently serves on the leadership team of Stocksfield Baptist Church in the Tyne valley of Northumberland.
