Professor Simon Kolstoe

Originally a Structural Biologist working in academic/industrial drug discovery, an interest in the way science (and research more generally) is conducted, and what makes it different from other types of human activity, allowed me to move via a Senior Lectureship in Evidence Based Medicine through to an Associate Professorship in Bioethics.

My focus is now on the Ethics of human participant medical and military research, most notably human challenge studies where people are either deliberately infected, or exposed to risk. I chair a number of national research ethics committees, and am also a Trustee of the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO).

I served on the CiS committee between 2007 and 2012, attend St Luke’s church in Hedge End (Southampton), am married with three children, three cats and two dogs, and also play both guitar and cricket, where my enthusiasm is sadly not matched by my skill.
